To design and build working alpha prototypes of new products, learning about creativity, product design, teamwork, and working within a budget in a unifying engineering experience. The class is intended to emulate what engineers might experience in a design team at a modern product development firm.

Objective

An integrated vise solution, that can hold tightly onto irregular workpieces without damaging them. ReVise is equipped with jaws that conform to a variety of shapes utilizing granular jamming technology via pump actuation.

The Process

MIT 2.009: Product Engineering Process
Fall 2021

This alpha prototype product was designed and developed by a team of 20 students over 3 months. During my fourth year at MIT,  I had the pleasure of working on the Pink team in The Product Engineering class. I had the role of system integrator (SI) which essentially meant I had to coordinate with and organize the whole team along with the second SI. As an SI I learned the challenges of running a large team. I also learned how to listen to individuals and try to use each teammate's abilities to their greatest potential. This class taught me a tremendous amount about engineering an entirely new product, but also gave me the leadership skills I desired to manage large teams. I had my hands in many areas of this project but I mainly worked with the CAD and general design of the body of the vise. Working with this team was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, so please enjoy the photo gallery.
